The Atlanta Falcons joined the National Football League in 1966 and since 1970 they have been members of the National Football Conference starting in NFC West until 2001 and currently in NFC South. The team started playing in the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium before moving to the Georgia Dome in 1992. Recently in 2017 they moved to the multi-purpose Mercedes-Benz Stadium which is also home to MLS team Atlanta United. It took the Falcons ten years to first reach the postseason losing the Divisional Playoffs to the Dallas Cowboys 20-27 in 1978. Over the next twenty years they reached the playoffs only four more times only making the Divisional playoffs twice. In 1997 Dan Reeves was appointed Head Coach and with the combined talents of quarterback Chris Chandler and running back Jamal Anderson would enjoy their most successful season yet in 1998.

Winning their Division for only the second time in their history they went into the postseason with more confidence than usual. They faced San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional playoffs coming good 20-18 in an incredibly tense game that went down to the wire. The NFC Championship game against the Minnesota Vikings has been hailed as one of the greatest ever games in the NFL history with Anderson nailing a 38-yard field goal in OT to take the game 30-27. This took the Falcons to their first ever final against defending champions the Denver Broncos. Atlanta put the first points on the board but after that would never retake the lead with the Broncos' outstanding defense keeping them back. In the fourth quarter the Broncos opened up an unbeatable lead despite a late Falcons comeback.

Despite being a semi-regular presence in the postseason it would be almost twenty years before the team reached the Super Bowl again. In 2016 wins in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks and then the Green Bay Packers led to Super Bowl LI against the New England Patriots. The game is perhaps one of the greatest in history . Atlanta led throughout the whole game until the very last minute of regular time, and were leading 9-28 going into the fourth quarter when the Patriots and legend Tom Brady staged one of the greatest ever comebacks. Tying the score on 57 seconds the Patriots forced the game into OT and scored a touchdown for the win leaving Falcons fans heartbroken.
