The Green Bay Packers joined the National Football League in 1919 and is the third oldest franchise in the NFL. It has played in a number of different divisions as the NFL has grown and expanded and since 1970 it has been a member of the National Football Conference, in the Central Division until 2001 and since then in the North Division. Its home stadium has been Lambeau Field since 1957 and the team colors are dark green, gold and white. The Packers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NFL having won numerous Championships and several Super Bowls and is famous for its loyal fan base.
The team scored its first major success being named NFL Champions for three successive years from 1929, as well as winning several NFL Championships in the next few years. After a 15-year drought they returned to winning ways in the 1960s winning three NFL Championships between 1961-65. They also won the first and second Super Bowls in 1966 and 1967 beating the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders.
The 1970s and ‘80s were lean years for Packers' fans with the team only making it to the postseason twice. Things turned around in the 1990s with strong performances in the playoffs and finally making it to another Super Bowl in 1996 where a 35-21 win against the New England patriots earned them another title. The following year they got through to the final again but this time went down to the Denver Broncos 31-24.
After the Millennium the Packers were still going strong in the playoffs most seasons leading to a fifth Super Bowl appearance in 2010, this time facing the Pittsburgh Steelers. Green Bay dominated the first three quarters but the Steelers started to pull back in the 4th before the Packers sealed the deal finally emerging victorious 31-25.
With its long history it is perhaps not surprising that Green Bay has developed rivalries with several other teams, including the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. The Green Bay fans are some of the most passionate in the sport, often known as Cheeseheads, because of local cheese production, fans commonly wear cheesehead hats.
