The Los Angeles Chargers played their first season in the American Football League in 1960 moving just one year later to San Diego where they stayed for 56 seasons until 2016. They joined the National Football League in the 1970 merger playing in the American Football Conference West Division. From 2020 The Chargers will play at the newly built Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park sharing the stadium with the LA Rams. It has a capacity of over 70,000 which can be increased for 100,000 for major events. The team colors are powder blue, gold, navy blue and white.
In their first season in the AFL the LA Chargers won their division but lost the AFL Championship to the Houston Oilers 24-16. The following year they moved to San Diego with the exact same result, a division win and a loss in the Championship game to the Oilers. Two seasons later in 1963 they made it to their third Championship final and this time were successful, dominating the game and beating the Boston Patriots 51-10 to win their first title. They made the finals for the next two seasons as well but each time were beaten by the Buffalo Bills.
It would be fourteen years before they made the postseason again when in the late 1970s and early 80s they had a short run of success. Winning their Division three years in succession from 1979 they reached the AFC Championship games in 1980 and 1981, although they lost both times to the Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals. It would take another ten seasons before they were ready to challenge again and in 1994 they finally made it to their first Super Bowl. After winning an incredibly close Divisional Playoff 22-21 against the Miami Dolphins the Chargers proceeded to overcome the Pittsburgh Steelers for their first AFC Championship win. In Super Bowl XXIX the San Francisco 49ers dominated the high-scoring game emerging victorious 49-26.
Since the Millennium the Chargers have had some postseason action, notably in 2007 where they reached the AFC Championship for the fourth time but ended up losing to the New England Patriots who had a perfect 16-0 regular season record. After a controversial move back to LA in 2017 the Chargers have struggled somewhat to meet attendance goals and the long-term viability of the team in the city has been in question. Success on the field may be the only answer to that question.
