It all started in 1936 in Ohio as the Cleveland Rams played in the second American Football League before joining the National Football League the following year. They had their first taste of success winning the NFL Championship game in 1945 by beating the Washington Redskins in a narrow 15-14 victory. Just one month later the team relocated to Los Angeles for the first time with climate and crowd-size being the primary motivations, and taking the name the Los Angeles Rams.
They reached their second NFL Championship game in 1949 but were crushed by the Philadelphia Eagles 14-0, with heavy rain turning the field into mud. The next year saw another loss in the final game, this time against their former hometown as the Cleveland Browns won the Championship in their very first season in the NFL, but the LA Rams had their revenge the next season beating the Browns 24-17. Another loss to the Browns in 1955 was the closest they came to major honors for almost twenty years.
The Rams lost four NFC Championship games between 1974 and 1978 before finally making it to their first Super Bowl in the 1979 season. The game was very close until the fourth quarter when the Pittsburgh Steelers took total control scoring two touchdowns. They had some minor successes in the 1980s in Wild Card and Divisional playoffs but by the mid 90s the team's lack of success and financial issues forced another move, this time to Missouri where they became the St. Louis Rams in 1995.
After beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship, the St Louis Rams faced the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV. The Titans came back from 16-0 to tie the game with just over 2 minutes left to play. The Rams scored a touchdown to take the lead again and the final play of the game has gone down in NFL history as linebacker Mike Jones stopped the Titans' Kevin Dyson just one yard short of the goal line. Another Super Bowl appearance against the New England Patriots in the 2001 season ended in disappointment, however. The team endured ten years of a playoff drought before finally relocating again in 2016, this time back to L.A. and taking their previous name of the Los Angeles Rams.
