The New England Patriots were formed in 1959 and played in the American Football League. They played their first ten seasons as the Boston Patriots followed by a single season as the Bay State Patriots before finally moving to Foxborough, Massachusetts in 1971 and taking their current name. The Pats have played in the American Football Conference East Division since the AFL-NFL merger and since 2002 at the Gillette Stadium which has a capacity of almost 69,000. The team colors are navy blue, red, silver and white, and the team mascot is Pat Patriot, a soldier of the American Revolution.
In recent years the Patriots have become one of the most successful teams in NFL history registering a number of Super Bowl wins, but their first two decades were very lean. From 1960 to 1984 their main claim to fame was an early AFL Championship loss in 1963. In the 1985 season they made it to their first Super Bowl, losing heavily 46-10 to the Chicago Bears. Eleven years later they reached the final again, this time going down to the Green Bay Packers.
In 2000 Bill Belichick was named as coach and made a number of changes that would be the start of a golden age for the team. In 2001 they won their first Super Bowl 20-17 against the St Louis Rams with an incredible final play field goal. This also marked the first time Tom Brady was named SB MVP. The team seemed to take a rest in 2002 not qualifying for the postseason before taking back-to-back Super Bowls in 2003 and 04. Super Bowl XXXVIII has many points of interest, known as one of the best finals of all time and a half-time incident with Janet Jackson's “wardrobe malfunction”. The Pats would win against the Carolina Panthers with a field goal with just 4 seconds left. The following year was another narrow victory 24-21 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
After two Super Bowl losses in 2007 and 2011 the Patriots regained the title in Super Bowl XLIX beating defending champions the Seattle Seahawks. Just two years later they were in the final again this time beating the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in OT. The following year they lost the final to the Eagles despite an outstanding game by Tom Brady. 2018 saw a return to glory as they took the title in Super Bowl LIII beating the LA Rams 13-3.
