The Washington Redskins joined the NFL in 1932 and played in the Eastern Division until 1949. Since 1970 they have played in the National Football Conference East Division. The ‘Skins are one of the most valuable franchises in sport and have won numerous Championships and several Super Bowls.
In their first season in the NFL they were known as the Boston Braves and then the Boston Redskins before making the move to Washington in 1937, winning the NFL Championship against the Bears that same year. They beat the Braves again in 1942 before entering a long postseason drought until the 1970s. In 1972 they finished first in their Division and were confident heading into the Playoffs. After beating the Green Bay Packers they faced the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship and a 26-3 win took them to their first Super Bowl where they lost to the Miami Dolphins.
The 1980s were a golden period for the team after the introduction of Joe Gibbs as Head Coach with three Super Bowl appearances and two wins. Their first victory came in 1982 becoming the first team to win despite losing all their pre-season games. Facing the Dolphins again, this time they got their revenge in a sweet 4th Quarter comeback to take the title. The following year they met the LA Raiders but went down 9-38 in a solid defeat. Their second victory came in 1987 in Super Bowl XXII in a mammoth 42-10 win against the Denver Broncos.
The Redskins scored their third Super Bowl in 1991 after beating the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions en route to meeting the Buffalo Bills in the final. They dominated the scoring in the first three Quarters and took the game 37-24 despite a late comeback by the Bills in the 4th Quarter. The ‘91 Redskins team has gone down in NFL history as being one of the best teams of all time. After the retirement of Gibbs at the end of that season the next three decades have seen limited success in the postseason with successive losses in Wild Card Playoffs.
The Washington Redskins have faced repeated calls over the last decades to change its name as it is considered offensive to Native Americans. They also have several notable rivalries with other teams including the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. They have been playing at FedEx Field since 1997 and their team colors are Burgundy and Gold.
