The Indianapolis Colts were founded in 1953 as the Baltimore Colts before moving to Indianapolis in 1984 and have won several titles and championships throughout their history. After the NFL merger in 1970 they played in the American Football Conference East Division before moving to AFC South Division in the 2002 expansion. Since 2008 they have played at the Lucas Oil Stadium which has a capacity of 67,000. Their name comes from Baltimore's history of horse breeding and the team colors are royal blue and white.
The Baltimore Colts won their first title in 1958 when they narrowly beat the New York Giants 23-17 to win the NFL Championship. The following year they repeated the achievement, this time with an easier 31-16 win, again over the Giants. They played their third NFL Championship game in 1964 suffering a humiliating 27-0 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Four seasons later they made it to their first Super Bowl. After winning the Coastal Division with a 13-1 record they won the Divisional Playoffs 24-14 against the Minnesota Vikings before cruising to victory 34-0 against the Cleveland Browns to win the NFL Championship. At Super Bowl III they faced the New York Jets as heavy favorites to win but the game ended in a shock defeat.
1970 saw the merger of the NFL and AFL and a reorganization of the league as well as the Colts best season to date. An easy 17-0 win in the Divisional Playoffs against the Bengals was followed by another win against the Raiders to take the Conference title. Super Bowl V was a match up against the Dallas Cowboys and is most remembered for being filled with errors by both sides (aka “Blunder Bowl” or “Blooper Bowl”). The game was incredibly tight and finally decided with 5 seconds left when Jim O'Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal to win the game for the Colts 16-13.
After moving to Indianapolis in 1984 it took about a decade before the Colts were regularly involved in the postseason and it wasn't until 2006 that they recorded a third Super Bowl appearance ending a 35-year drought. This time they faced the Chicago Bears who were also coming off a drought but in the end the Colts were too strong and won their second Super Bowl 29-17. Three seasons later they reached another final but this time went down to the New Orleans Saints 31-17.
