The New York Jets started as the New York Titans in 1960 in the American Football League. After going bankrupt in 1962, the new owners considered various names such as the Dodgers, Gothams and Borros before finally deciding on the Jets, as the team were to play at Shea Stadium close to LaGuardia Airport. In 1970 the team joined the NFL in the AFL-NFL merger playing in the American Football Conference East Division. They played at Shea Stadium until 1983 before moving to the Giants Stadium until 2009. Since 2010 they have played at MetLife Stadium which they share with the New York Giants. The stadium has one of the largest capacities of any NFL arena, seating 82,500. The team colors are Gotham green, Spotlight white and Stealth black.
After a very rocky start as the Titans, the Jets had their first success in the 1968 season. They won their Division and moved on through their first postseason by winning the AFL Championship 27-23 against the Oakland Raiders. In Super Bowl III they faced the Baltimore Colts as the underdogs, as many believed the NFL was superior to the AFL. The Jets took the lead in the second quarter and never looked back winning the game 16-7, becoming the first AFL team to win the title. Although the team made it to the first round of the postseason the following year the first decade in the NFL was a total blowout.
In 1981 they reached the postseason for the first time in 12 years but only to lose in the Wild Card Playoffs. The 1982 season was affected by an eight-week players' strike but the Jets made it to the postseason winning the First Round Playoffs against the Bengals. A win against the Raiders in the Second Round took them to their first AFC Championship where they went down badly 14-0 to the Dolphins.
The 1990s saw little postseason success. The best result came in 1998 where they lost to the Broncos in their second AFC Championship. The decade after the Millennium brought postseason action most years but again only getting as far as the AFC Championship. In 2009 they lost to the Colts 30-17 while the next year they went down narrowly 24-19 to the Steelers. In the following seasons they did not qualify at all for the postseason and fans are growing restless.
