The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the oldest and most successful franchises in the National Football League. The Steel Curtain hold numerous Division, Conference and Super Bowl records and have picked up a number of historic rivals along the way.
After joining the NFL in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates, wins did not come quickly or easily to the team. Fans hoped that a name change to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940 would bring a change in fortunes, but they continued to struggle in the war years. Player shortages forced two mergers, first with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1943, becoming known as the Steagles, and the following year with the Chicago Cardinals, known as Card-Pitt. Success would ultimately take 40 years.
By the 1970s the Steelers had never even won their Division and had lost both of only two playoff games. Things started to turn around with the introduction of Chuck Noll as coach in 1969. In 1972 won the AFC Central Division for the very first time and lost the Conference Championship narrowly to the Miami Dolphins. The following year they went all the way beating the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 in Super Bowl IX. The 70s were a period of absolute dominance for the Pittsburgh Steelers winning four Super Bowls, including two against the Dallas Cowboys and finally the LA Rams.
The team struggled somewhat for the next two decades with mixed playoff successes and reaching only one more Super Bowl in the 1995 season, losing 27-17 to rivals Dallas Cowboys. Ten years later they reached Super Bowl XL and faced the Seattle Seahawks, emerging victorious 21-10. Three years later the Pittsburgh Steelers made history becoming the first team to win six Super Bowls. Despite trailing for all of the game, the Arizona Cardinals took the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter, then the Steelers pulled it back scoring a touchdown with just :35 left on the clock to win 27-23. A third title in five years was not to be as they narrowly lost Super Bowl XLV to the Green Bay Packers 31-25.
The Steelers traditional rivals include the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos in playoffs and the Dallas Cowboys, especially in Super Bowls. Although it took around four decades for the Pittsburgh Steelers to find the winning formula, the next four decades were filled with records and wins galore. Pittsburgh Steeler fans are hoping for more of the same in the future.
