The Blue Wave are one of the youngest teams in the NFL joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1976. But Seattle Seahawks fans have become known as some of the loudest, even being called the 12th Man or 12th Fan.
The Hawks spent their first season in NFC West before moving to AFC West from 1977 to 2001 then back to their original Conference. They had a slow start, not making the playoffs until 1983 when Chuck Knox took over as coach. The team ended its run that season in the AFC Championship going down to the LA Raiders, and the following season to the Miami Dolphins in the Divisional Playoffs. The Seahawks won their first Division title in 1988 but were again stopped in the playoffs by the Cincinnati Bengals.
The 90s were a lean time for the team but they turned a corner in 1999 with the introduction of Mike Holmgren as head coach. Winning the Division title in his first year was followed by a loss in the Wild Card playoffs, but for the first time in a decade Seattle Seahawks fans had real hope. Two more losses in Wild Card playoffs followed in ‘03 and ‘04 before they scored their first ever Conference win in 2005. Super Bowl XL was a match up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game was tight until the fourth quarter when a Steelers touchdown and some controversial calls saw Pittsburgh emerge the winners 21-10.
The Seahawks were stopped in the Divisional playoffs four times between 2006 and 2012 before finally making the Super Bowl for the second time in the 2013 season. A win against the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional playoffs and then the 49ers for the NFC Championship meant only the Denver Broncos remained to beat. A dominant display led to one of the most one-sided victories in Super Bowl history, giving the Seattle Seahawks their first Super Bowl. The following year they looked to be on course to repeat their success winning Divisional playoffs against the Carolina Panthers and the NFC Championship against the Green Bay Packers. In Super Bowl XLIX they faced the New England Patriots in a close game. At halftime the game was tied, but although the Hawks took the lead in the third, Green Bay came back to win in the fourth.
With consistent levels of quality play in recent years Seattle Seahawk fans sure have plenty of reasons to be noisy.
